Family & Advocacy Educational Webinars

Inform – Empower – Connect

At CAHN, we understand the unique challenges faced by African and Caribbean families and individuals. We are here to offer a support that is culturally sensitive, community driven with the goal of helping families feel more informed, empowered, and equipped to advocate for their rights and the well-being of their loved ones.

Webinars’ Objectives

These main objectives can be broken down in 5 key areas:

  1. Education and Awareness

The webinar provides valuable information on important topics that families need to understand, such as healthcare, special education, legal rights, social services, and mental health. These sessions often help attendees stay informed about current policies, available resources, and best practices.

  1. Empowerment and Advocacy Skills

Our webinars equip participants with the skills to advocate for their loved ones’ needs, as well as for themselves.

  1. Community Building and Connection

Webinars provide a platform for families to connect, share experiences, and offer support. This helps foster a sense of community, making attendees feel less isolated in their journeys.

  1. Access and Resource Sharing

Families learn about organisations, support networks, and other resources available to them. Webinars may include guest speakers from various organizations who can introduce participants to new tools and services.

  1. Encouraging Engagement with Policy and Decision-Makers

We emphasise the importance of policy engagement, showing participants how to get involved in decision-making processes or how to communicate with elected officials effectively.

When and where?

Every three months, CAHN’s Family & Advocacy Online Sessions provide a safe space for members of our community to learn, share, and find practical solutions to the issues that affect them the most.

Our sessions are designed to address the complex and often overlapping struggles that disproportionately impact the black community.

Each session features:

  • Expert guidance from qualified professionals who discuss critical family issues and offer actionable strategies to overcome them.
  • Signposting to other Expert Services across the UK is a key feature of this programme.
  • CAHN’s dedicated Advocacy Officers answering your questions on a wide range of topics, providing real-time advice on the many services we offer to the black community.
  • Inspiring guest speakers who share their expertise or personal journeys, shedding light on how to rise above the difficulties faced by so many in our community.

“Listening to the Speaker, describe her life with SEND children and how she manages them, I felt like someone understood me for the first time. For the first time in a long time, I did not feel alone. This session brought me a deep sense of comfort and relief”

Joanna

Our Family & Advocacy Sessions are more than just meetings—they are a lifeline for those in need of tailored support and guidance. We know that every family’s story is unique, which is why we create a space for open dialogue and personal connection, helping individuals find their path forward with dignity and strength.

“After attending the session on what to do when your child is in care, it gave me the confidence to interact with the social worker, without being defensive. I also had a lot of hope that with my continued cooperation, my child will return home”

– David

These sessions aim to uplift vulnerable families by focusing on culturally relevant solutions and fostering a sense of empowerment within the African and Caribbean communities and beyond. Everyone is welcomed at these sessions regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, etc.

“As someone who had recently been granted refugee status, the UK housing system confused me. Through the homelessness support sessions, I got 1-2-1 tailored support, which helped me to navigate through the temporary accommodation phase with ease and confidence”
